Why Northeast Ohio is a Great Place to Live + Giveaway

June 30, 2017 by val Leave a Comment

Northeast Ohio is a great place to live and here’s why.  Plus, read on to learn about how you can win a $25 gift card to one of my favorite places.

Cleveland.  The rust belt.

But do you know what’s happening in the rest belt?  We are shaking off the rust and rising up.  1 NBA Championship, a World Series run and business is returning to the Main Streets of Northeast Ohio.  Local businesses are giving the big box stores a run for their money.  Communities are rising up.  While downtown Cleveland is small in comparison to other big cities, there is an influx of downtown living and what was once a 9-5 city is now becoming a full community where people, live, work and play.

Northeast Ohio is made up of many communities, each with their own charm.

My community is Cuyahoga Falls, which was born as one of the many communities of the Akron tire industry and Cleveland steel industry in the early to middle 20th century.

The houses in Cuyahoga Falls vary between homes that are 100 years old to newly built.  But it all blends beautifully.

Cuyahoga Falls, like Cleveland, is experiencing a rebirth.  Main street in now in the process of being restored.  There is a new shopping district and movie theater.  All streets are in the process of being repaved.  There are community parks abound and numberous community events throughtout the year, like Food Truck Rally’s, Concerts, Octoberfests, Irishfests, Farmer’s Markets and more.   It’s what helps make this community a community.

burntwoodtaverngiveaway

When we first bought our house we planned to be here for 5 years then move to the “next bigger house”.  Instead I love the community that I am raising my kids in so much, we have been here for 12 and don’t plan to go anywhere anytime soon.  We can walk to the parks, restaurants, even the grocery store.  We are only 20 minutes from the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and within 15 minutes of several Metroparks.

One of my favorite places to hang out in the Burntwood Tavern which is set right along the Cuyahoga River and has some of the best Moscow Mules you have ever had, (they also have a few other locations in Northeast Ohio.)  One lucky reader will get a $25 gift certificate to the Burntwood Taven! Click the Rafflecopter box below and tell me your favorite place to eat in Northeast Ohio in the comments below to enter.  1 winner will be chosen at random at the close of the contest.

What Are The Best Beach Chairs?

May 9, 2017 by val Leave a Comment

Later this month we head to the beach…

This is the first time we have ever drove to the beach and we will need to bring our own beach chairs.  I don’t want to spend a fortune (under $50/chair and $20- $30 per chair is the goal).  We also will have the kids and lots of other beach stuff so I need them to be family friendly…lightweight but durable is what we are going for.

So after much searching on the internet and in stores here is what I have learned, which two I finally narrowed it down to and which ones I actually chose.  I will update this post with a more thorough review after our trip so you know how they worked out.

What I learned.

The main thing that I learned is that beach chairs come in two ways… cheap and expensive… there really isn’t a middle ground.

Usually when I purchase things my rule is go in the middle on price and features.   In this case with beach chairs I went the more expensive route.

The two I finally narrowed it down to was Tommy Bahama and Nautica.

Both the reviews that I read stated that the chairs were easy to get out of (especially when you have to get up frequently to run after kids).  By all means these are not the most expensive chairs on the market, but the closest to the “middle ground” in price and features that I could find.

Tommy Bahama 2016 Backpack Cooler Chair with Storage Pouch and Towel Bar ( Green/Blue Stripe)

Product Features:

  • Only weighs 7 lbs
  • Insulated storage and cargo pouches on back
  • Lays Flat (5 Positions total)
  • Rubber carry handle
  • Folding towel bar, Weight Limit 300Lbs (136.1kg)
  • Lightweight Rust Proof Aluminum Frame
  • Backpack straps

What I really don’t like about this chair:

  • My only complaint and honestly it may keep the chair working better in the long fun is that the bar goes across the front of the seat which could become uncomfortable… but maybe not.  with 4.5 stars on Amazon people don’t seem to mind.

What I really liked about this chair:

  • 4.5 Star rating on Amazon.com
  • I loved the backpack straps and the pouches on the back including the insulted pouch.
  • The arms of the chair, while plastic seem to be well made and product reviews seem to back that up.
  • It was a pound lighter than the Nautica which is nice but not a deal breaker.
  •  I really liked the color pattern as well.

Nautica Lightweight 5 Position Recliner Folding Beach Chair with Cup Holder, Ombre Blue

Product Features:

  • Lightweight aluminum frame(approx 8 pounds)
  • Fabric seat
  • 5 Position
  • Lays Flat
  • Double Drink Caddy
  • Insulated side pouch

What I don’t like about this chair:

  • Not a backpack style so all weight on my shoulder and can slip off
  • The cooler gets “smooshed” when the chair folds up

What I really liked about this chair…

  • Double Cup Holders
  • I really liked this pattern better than any I saw
  • The seat bar of the chair does not wrap around the front.

The final debate for me was price.  I was able to find the Nautica at Sam’s Club for $30 along with a matching umbrella for $20 more.  And since I am not sure if a beach vacation will be happening for us every year, I decided not to make as large of an investment in chairs and an umbrella.

Truthfully, had it not been for such a price difference I would have taken the Tommy Bahama chair (which also has match umbrellas available) and if we make frequent trips to the beach in the future I can see investing in a good backpack chair like the Tommy Bahama.

What are your fav beach chairs?  Why?

Is there anything you don’t like about them?

Where did you get them from?

And have they stood the test of time?

The (Bark-tober) October BarkBox Review is Here!

November 3, 2016 by val Leave a Comment

October BarkBox Review

Nothing is scarier than running out of treats and chewy toys for our big guy.

Luckily this month’s Barkbox was spook-takular!

Here is our October Barkbox Review

Scouts favorite by far was the zombie squirrel.  Zombie squirrel met his demise quick enough that the cast of the Walking Dead would have been proud.

The other “stuffie” this month was the cutest cauldron… it was a great addition to this months theme and all stuffies from Barkbox have squeakers which is a huge incentive for Scout to stay busy with them until the squeaker is out… it also keeps him out of trouble for the week or two following when we get our BarkBox.

The treats this month include Chick or Treat which was great for the month’s theme but I do which they allowed for allergy preferences as Scout has a chicken allergy and we have to watch how much chicken he gets in his treats and buy non-chicken food.

The green bark gummies treats were a hit as was the bully stick that was included.  Overall, Scout was pretty excited about his trick or treat haul.

See below for more pics of this months box!

September BarkBox Review

September 21, 2016 by val Leave a Comment

What follows the dog days of summer?

Back to School for all the BarkBox pups of course!

This months package was amazingly cute and their graphics team went above and beyond.  The detailed thought and creativity of the Barkbox team amazes me almost as much as my dog likes everything else that is inside the box.

This month my “little” guy (who now weighs in at 72 pounds)  enjoyed a large milk carton chewie, learned his ABC’s from playing with his treats, but I am proud to say that his favorite thing was his new Dogs and their People chewie book.

It was definitely a page-turner for him as well as a page ripper.  Its made of pretty sturdy fabric so it has withstood the multiple chewing  reading sessions from him so far.

See below for more pics of this months box!

Our Island Adventure in Ohio

September 20, 2016 by val Leave a Comment

An island adventure in Ohio?  Seriously?  Seriously.

An island adventure in Ohio? Seriously? Seriously.

While many northern Ohioians know the about these islands located not far off the coast of Lake Erie, these islands are an undiscovered secret for many people in the rest of the midwest.

There are two main islands.  The first is Kelly’s Island, which is mainly residential, although it does boast several B&B’s and is the perfect place if you are looking for a quiet Island Getaway.

For our adventure we took the Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay.  Miller has been kind enough to invite us aboard the past few years and everytime we find new things to explore when we go to the island.  This time was a little different because it was the first time that we took the kids with us.

One of my favorite things about Miller Ferry is that we can just drive our car onto the ferry  (for an additional charge).  We like bringing our car because it gives us our own transportation around the island and makes it easy to haul all your stuff onto the ferry, especially when you have kids!

We took an evening Ferry and the view was beautiful.

An island adventure in Ohio? Seriously? Seriously.

The weekends can be pretty busy on Put-In-Bay so we decided to avoid the crowds and go up on a Sunday evening and explore around the Island on Monday. Our Ohio Island Adventure

To stay on the island was a bit of a last minute decision and luck was with us as we found a great place to stay, which was right downtown at Harbour Square Suites.  I would not stay downtown on a Friday or Saturday night with kids as it becomes a hot-spot for a more adult crowd on those nights, but a Sunday night was no problem. An Ohio Island Adventure

One of the best things about our place was the patio area that stood above the restaurant and bar below. Once I put the kids to bed I was about to go out on the patio and listen to the live piano player while still in earshot of the kiddos in case they needed anything.

As for the accommodations, we were pretty impressed with the size of the space and having the kitchen. The bathroom was a little small and only had a shower but for one night with the kids it was fine.  We had our own bedroom and the kids had their own bedroom.  There was a door in the kids room that went to a downstairs storage area, which we weren’t able to lock, and that was a little strange. I did my best to make sure the kids didn’t notice as I think they would have had a hard time sleeping knowing that the door to the creepy storage space couldn’t be locked.  All negatives out of the way, this is still a great location and the price we got was pretty fair considering what rooms go for on the island.

In the morning we woke up to a nice view of the Lake and Perry’s monument, along sound golf carts buzzing around the island as a new day starts on this tiny island paradise in the midwest.

Since our suite had a kitchen with coffee maker we had breakfast in our suite and enjoyed some coffee on the patio while enjoying the sites and sounds of the island.

Across the street from us was the Village Bakery and Cafe, the menu had several choices for both breakfast and lunch  and the prices also were reasonable.  Click here to view their full menu

If you choose to grab a quick breakfast there, my suggestion is to take your morning coffee and pastry or take it over to the park across the street and enjoy a great view of the lake and docked boats.

Island tip:  It takes a little more effort to source things when you have to get them across the lake and also you are on an island… so things will cost slightly more than on the mainland.

E's golf cart rental Put-In-BayOur first stop of the morning was actually to drive over to get our Golf Cart from E’s Golf Cart Rental.  Even though we had our van on the island a golf cart is a great way to get around the island since parking can be limited at different attractions.  It is also pretty fun to ride around on a golf cart for a day and it was one of the kids favorite things about being on the island.

img_6835

Once we grabbed our golf cart from E’s we left our van in the Miller Ferry parking lot and then proceeded onto Perry’s Monument.

It is operated by the National Park System and educates visitors all about the Battle of Lake Erie.  The center next to the monument is fairly new and the staff that work there are happy to answer any questions you have.

Right around the corner from Perry’s monument is a small area that offers access to the lake and has a couple picnic tables.  While there isn’t alot of shade it would still be a great place to have a picnic and we spent about a half hour just playing in the water and collecting tiny lake sea shells.  There is no lifeguard or anything so it’s not really a play to swim, but it is fun to collect shells and dip your toe in the water.

An Ohio Island AdventureAfter all of that, it was about time for lunch so we went over to Blu Luna, which is the restaurant right by our hotel.  Since you are in the middle of Lake Erie, you have to at least get fish once, so i ordered their Walleye Nachos, something that you don’t find everyday.  It’s actually an appetizer, but I ordered it as my meal.  The portion was generous, so if you get these, it could easily make a meal for two.

Overall the service was good and dining on the patio on a beautiful summer day was quite a treat. An Ohio Island Adventure

img_6854

After lunch we ventured over to the Butterfly Gardens at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center.

The kids loved the numerous butterflies and worked hard to try to get butterflies to land on them after one decided to img_6855make my husband’s shirt it’s home while we were in the garden.  img_6849

We also enjoyed playing at the Fort A_Maze’n maze while at the family fun center.

Perry’s Family Fun Center, also offers putt-putting, Perry’s cave and the rock climbing,  but we decided to hop back in the golf cart for some more island exploring.

An Ohio Island Adventure

If you are into camping their is also a state campground on the island that offered primitive camping.

Next to it is Put-In-Bay Watercraft Rentals, where you can rent a Paddleboard, Kayak, Jet Ski or Boat to explore the lake that surrounds the island.  See the picture below for their rates as of August 2016.
img_6871

An Ohio Island AdventureWe also ventured over to Put-in-Bay Winery and enjoyed a great view of the lake while the kids played on the lawn.

Afterwords we went over to the park, where the kids played on Will’s Playground.  img_6885img_6880

The park is in central downtown PIB and offers a great view of the lake as well.  img_6876

Finally, before our island departure we made a stop by the Candy Bar, a small candy shop on the island that offers fudge and variety of candies that both the kids and big kids will appreciate.img_6894img_6896  img_6898

Want to see the video of our Island Adventure?

Special Thanks to: Miller Ferry for inviting us aboard to be their guest, E’s Golf Cart Rental for our Island Ride and to Perry’s Family Fun Center for our Family Fun Passes. All opinions expressed in this post are my own.

August Barkbox Review

September 18, 2016 by val Leave a Comment

It’s the August BarkBox Review- Pawsome!

This Barkbox was created with a beach theme in mind and the toys that we got were so cute that it was pretty sad when our #destroyersclub pup dug into his box of toys for the month. Here’e more about my August Barkbox Review…

Even if you aren’t a regular subscriber, one item I would really recommend is their fish taco toy, which takes ALOT and runs about $12-$16 if you want to purchase it directly from the Barkshop.  Funny enough its been about a month since we got our August box and while the Soc-Cal Surfer Hedgie is now just a stuffed animal carcass – my dog loves to still play with it – so the toys last awhile even though the “stuffy” part might come out quickly your #destroyerclub member will probably keep playing with it which makes the box pretty worthwhile.

I did a quick calculation and if purchased separately these items would have cost over $50 so paying just under $30 makes it a great deal and probably cheaper than one of our regular trips to the pet store.
