How to Switch to Cloth Diapers for under $100

June 17, 2017 by val Leave a Comment

Here’s how to switch to cloth diapers for under $100.

Or just not sure about plunking out money for expensive cloth diapers?

Here’s how I made the switch to cloth diapers without spending a fortune.

how to switch to cloth diapers

Update:  The website I had purchased them from seems to no longer be in business… so… I have updated this post with another resource to find the econobum starter kit and additional economic options I found online to help you get started into cloth diapering.

What I used for my LO’s awas the Econobum covers and insert pack which worked for 8-35 pounds so no having to rebuy diapers as they grow.  I thought they were great and were my go to verses an all-in-one which are bulkier to carry around IMO harder to clean.

These diapers are designed for 8-35 pounds, so they will last you beginning to potty training. I have used these on both my 2 month old daughter and my 3 year old son and they have worked great for both!  The earlier you use diapers the better as other moms will tell you the bigger babies and toddlers get the bigger the “mess”.  If they are a late potty trainer there may come a time where you decide to switch back to disposables.  And that’s okay.  But you can definitely save some money in the first year with cloth diapers as smaller baby dirty diapers are super easy to (clean most of the time) and so its a lot easier to cloth diaper.

Yes.  There is alot of washing in cloth diapers, but its really not that bad once you have a system in place.  And if you can, hang diapers out on the line and Mr. Sunshine will help keep them white.

If you plan on washing diapers every other day, order about 6-8 of these Econobum trial kits which comes with a cover and 3 prefolds.

These sell for about $12 each I used a company called Tender Cargo – great customer service and prompt shipping and now unfortunately it seems out of business, but if you Google search Econobum you will find other retailers who sell starter kits for about $50 and individual diapers.

This kit costs around $50 at most vendors which comes with:

3 Covers
12 Prefolds
1 Wetbags

While doing this post update I came across  several option that are even cheaper than what I found a few years ago.  Here are some of my picks that came close in price to the Econobum kits I originally purchased and should still let you cloth diaper for under $100.

ALVABABY Baby Cloth Diapers One Size Adjustable Washable Reusable for Baby Girls and Boys 6 Pack with 12 Inserts giving you more outer covers and the ability to go from one size to the next without buying new diapers.  At this time this set runs about $30 and people seem to like the product so I at that price I would feel confident in giving them a try, especially at that price point.  There are lots of colors to choose from… this is just one example.

4 Pack Adjustable Size Waterproof Washable Pocket Cloth Diapers with 4 Inserts and Wet Bag at around $20

Baby Cloth Pocket Diapers 7 Pack, 7 Bamboo Inserts, 1 Wet Bag by Nora’s Nursery

This one is a little more expensive option at $59, but these patterns are completely adorable…

This similar (but not as cute) set  of 7 Reusable Pocket Diaper All In One  is a little more affordable at $29.

I would recommend having at least 2 of the kits seen here and then washing every or every other day depending on how often you need to change diapers.  You may actually want to get a couple different kits, see what you like best and then purchase additional kits when you find your favorite.

For overnights and extra protection, or for not so messy diapers you can get some pre-folds or pocket inserts that will help keep baby dry.  That way you can keep the cover and just change the insert.

Hopefully this saves you the insanity of the research process …saving you both TIME and MONEY, all while saving the environment one diaper at a time!

Please let me know how you made the switch to cloth diapers in the comments below.

Going Green on Black Friday: Steam Mops

November 17, 2010 by val Leave a Comment

Steam Mops are Hot this Season!

There are alot of stores which will be featuring deals on steam mops…there are lots of brands and models to choose but they all work on the concept of steam heat which is used to break up dirt and kill germs. I bought a Haan Steamer last year for $100 and I love the idea of using less chemicals around the house. Steam is not only enviromentally friendly, but friendly on your wallet (and your lungs 😉

Here are your best bets for Steamers based on price:

(Again these are “rumored” prices based on “leaked” Black Friday ads)

Shark Steam Pocket Mop

Big Lots has the Shark Steam Mop for $59 ($40 off retail price). Kohl’s also has this model advertised in its flyer, but for $99, making this a good deal if you can get one for $59. I will also note that Big Lots wil not only be open early on Friday, but Thanksgiving day as well.

Kohl’s is selling a couple different models. As mentioned they are selling the Shark Pocket Mop, but for $99 (regularly $139 at Kohls

Shark 2-in-1 Vac then Steam

Kohl’s also has the Shark 2-in-1 Vac then Steam. I really like this idea! I always vacuum before steaming but being able to do both with the same cleaning tool would save dragging the sweeper around everytime I want to steam my floors.

Kohls is also selling the Shark Deluxe Steam Mop for $49, but if you can make it to Big Lots, your probably better offer getting the Steam Pocket mop for $10 more.

Target will have the Shark Light and Easy Steam Mop (reg $89) on sale for $49, again probably Big Lots is a better bet.

However, not to be outdone, Wal-mart will offer the Deluxe Shark Steam Mop for $36.

Comparable to the Shark Vac then Steam is the Bissell Steam and Sweep which Sears is rumored to be offering for $119. Use the $10 off $50 or more coupon in the ad to bring it to $109
For a really inexpensive way to start steamin’ Macy’s is offering the Bionair Steamer for $19.99 after rebate (Reg. $59.99)
True Value is *rumor* offering a similar model made by Dirt Devil for $39

Leftover Chicken Parm with a side of Petroleum…

October 18, 2010 by val 2 Comments

Okay, this is going to be a big step considering the dependency we have on our Ziploc and Gladware…but my next goal in my efforts to continue to turn our household into a greener one is to get rid of my disposable plastic containers.

My main reason…I have the horrible habit of heating them in the microwave, I swear that I can just see the chemicals breaking down into my food as is does its waltz around the turntable…Yes, this is sort of an exageration, but not completely…

Plastics are essentially chemical cocktails which, will begin to break down at some point. Heat is a proponent of this process…therefore so wouldn’t it make sense that these chemicals would break down in the microwave? And what is there to absorb it? Yep…my dinner…with a dash of petroleum..yum!

Here are some of the products I am currently considering as replacements…

Like that this is a “green” product!

These seem like a great option!

A little concerns about the lids still being plastic – but this is the best valus of the choices thus far…

For snack storage to take on the go…

If any of you have already taken this step or have some good glass products for food storage – please let me know! Thanks!

Trash Talkin’…Products that Make Recycling Easy!

October 12, 2010 by val Leave a Comment

Here are a variety of products out there to help you make recycling an organized and easy (and even fashionable) process !

For the Kitchen

This single bin unit made by Simplehuman (one of my favorite brands for organizing) has such a fashionable look compared to the typical recycling bin and is a great price at only $30! It would be fantastic to buy to start recycling the office water bottles!

This sleek organizer is more expensive than the basic bins or foldable bags (around $100). It features 3 pop our bins for easy disposal and cleaning.

This is a really unique way to use that corner space! The unit spins to make it easy to access the proper bin.

Bins

Bins are one of the most economical ways to keep your recycling organized. I realize that alot of people may not prefer the bright colors in the home so they also make it in a clear/white plastic These retail around $40 a set (but you may be able to find them for around $25 if you keep an eye out 😉

Set of 3 Recycle Bins - 172002 (Clear) (53.75" H x 18.25" W x 21.25" D)
(Looking for less color? They also come in White)

Foldable Bags

These bins are super cute! They feature handles for carrying and can fold up when not in use (big plus if you are short on space like me!)

Kangaroom Recycle Bags, Set of 2

Most Innovative

By far, the most innovative product that I found was the Flings Recycle Bin. It stores completely flat. When you are ready to use you “fling” it open. There are ties to close it when it is full (It holds 60 cans or bottles) and it is the most economically priced at just $3.99/bin. Great idea for parties and cookouts too and there are custom parterns to go with a BBQ or birthday party!

Outdoor storage
This is certainly not an inexpensive option (runs about $300), but I really like the way it looks and would be great for those that have space and would like to keep their trash management out of sight!
